Defining the 'Good' TA (Susan)
In pairs or small groups, participants will first introduce themselves to each other, then identify the characteristics/qualities of a good TA. Participants will evaluate self in relation to profile of ideal sociology TA. Strategies for continual improvement will be presented.
10:15-10:30 BREAK (direct participants to mingle & meet)
10:30-11:30
Marking Assisgnments (Carl)
Students mark sample assignment, then in groups of three compare marks and discuss marking criteria. Groups are given previously marked assignment and asked to comment on appropriateness of instructor/TA comments. Debriefing to identify basic marking principles.
11:30-12:15
Video Case Studies (Susan or Chris)
Participants view several short-video segments showing TA/student interactions, and discuss their reactions in small groups and plenary. (Susan to select the video clips.)
12:15- 1:00 LUNCH
1:00-2:00
Demonstration Tutorial (Ena)
Demonstration and simulation, using 'fish-bowl' technique.
2:00-3:00
TA Concerns and Solutions (Susan)
In small groups, participants identify concerns they have about teaching, then generate solutions. Report in plenary.
3:00-3:30
Tea Break and Conclusions (All)
Comments from facilitators and participants.
